about

The melody and chords to "Creation Story" date back to the mid-2000s. The song was first played during a performance at Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco for the Artists Under the Radar festival.

I wanted to make a melody on the cedar flute that could also be played in unison with the saxophone to put the two instruments into conversation with each other. This specific melody was made with the idea of trying to convey the sense of journey and motion that is also present in Native American creation or origin stories. This is my way of composing where I'm from, where I'm at in the moment, and also thinking about where I'm going in the future.
